Don’t miss this chance to further advance your skills in refining your own stories by joining author/editor/librarian Sarah Reside on October 19th for her ARW Art of Writing workshop on Self-editing.
Overview
Self-editing is a skill that can make or break a book. But it’s not taught in schools. Instead, you’re only taught to scan your first draft for typos, and that’s not good enough when you’re looking to publish. Most books go through several drafts before they go to an agent or editor, which means the best skill you can invest in is self-editing.
Self-editing encompasses every stage of editing, from story adjustments to grammatical revisions. Writers need to know how to analyze their story and improve elements like pacing and character arcs, as well as what language foibles to avoid. This is what we’ll be learning to do in the workshop. You’ll leave armed with a plan and inspired to work on your book again.
What will we do in this workshop?
Discuss what self-editing entails
Learn the most efficient way to approach self-editing
Review the four stages of editing
Practise techniques to work through each stage
Understand when you need to hire a professional
Who is this workshop for?
Writers of fiction or nonfiction books will gain the most from this workshop as the content has been created with the cycle of production for novels and nonfiction books in mind. However, any writer who wants to improve their writing and self-editing skills is welcome!
