Almonte Readers & Writers is pleased to present the June series of Art of Writing workshops and courses exploring aspects of creative and technical skills development in literary arts, offered as part of the 2025 Lanark Lit Festival of Writing.
Overview
This playwriting workshop explores the craft of dramatic storytelling, from initial concept to polished script. Touching on a range of formats—including sketches, 10-minute plays, one-acts, and full-length productions—this course will guide participants through the essentials of dramatic structure, character development, pacing, and the art of crafting compelling beginnings and endings. Each session builds on the last, providing opportunities to refine ideas, experiment with voice and dialogue, and consider the practical realities of seeing a play brought to life on stage. Whether you have a full draft in progress or are just beginning to shape your story, this workshop will support your creative process and help you take the next steps with confidence.
With a focus on both the artistic and technical aspects of playwriting, this course will go beyond theory, integrating insights from theatre professionals to deepen the writer’s understanding of how a script functions in performance. Participants will leave with a clear roadmap for their script’s development, as well as practical knowledge about formatting, feedback opportunities, and the path to production. While there is no obligation to share work with the group, those who engage with the guided exercises will get the most out of the experience.
What will we do in the series?

Identify and apply key elements of dramatic structure, including rising action, pacing, and payoff.
Develop a one-page bullet outline of a play idea, refining it through feedback and exercises.

Explore voice, dialogue, and verbal tics to distinguish characters in a script.
Map out character relationships and motivations to enhance conflict and dramatic tension.
Craft Strong Beginnings and Endings
Experiment with different ways to open a play with impact and establish tone.
Learn strategies for structuring a satisfying and meaningful ending.
Apply “show, don’t tell” techniques to increase emotional engagement.
Bring the Script to Life
Gain insight into how actors and directors interpret a script.
Learn formatting standards and explore tools for writing and revising.
Identify practical next steps for workshopping, networking, and potential production.
Who is this course for?
This workshop is open to anyone with an interest in playwriting, whether you’re just starting to develop an idea or are refining a work-in-progress. No prior experience is necessary—only curiosity and a willingness to explore storytelling through dialogue and dramatic structure. Exercises are designed to be accessible and adaptable, with no requirement to share work aloud unless participants choose to do so. Writers from all backgrounds are encouraged to join and bring their unique perspectives to the group.
